UN Rights Chief Urges US to Lift Sanctions on ICC Judges
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, is calling on the United States to remove sanctions placed on judges of the International Criminal Court (ICC). This request follows the US imposing sanctions on four ICC officials for their investigation into actions by Israel and the United States. Turk argues these sanctions hinder the court's ability to impartially investigate and prosecute serious international crimes. The US maintains the ICC investigation is politically motivated.
Turk stated that the sanctions impede the ICC's ability to conduct independent and impartial investigations and prosecutions. He emphasized the importance of the court's role in holding individuals accountable for the most serious international crimes, including genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. The US, however, argues that the ICC's investigation is politically motivated and infringes on its national sovereignty. The US also asserts that it has its own robust legal system to investigate and prosecute any potential wrongdoing by its personnel.
The sanctions freeze any assets the ICC officials may have in the US and bar US citizens from engaging in transactions with them. Critics of the sanctions argue that they undermine the rule of law and send a message that the US is unwilling to be held accountable for its actions on the international stage. The situation remains a point of contention between the US and the international community, highlighting differing views on the ICC's jurisdiction and the limits of national sovereignty.
