Sen. Klobuchar Discusses AI Regulation, Infrastructure on 'Face the Nation'

**Margaret Brennan:** Senator Klobuchar, thank you for joining us.

**Sen. Amy Klobuchar:** Thank you, Margaret. It's good to be here.

**Margaret Brennan:** Let's start with artificial intelligence. There's a lot of talk about regulation. What specific regulations do you believe are necessary, and what's the timeline for getting something passed in Congress?

**Sen. Amy Klobuchar:** We need to approach AI regulation with a sense of urgency but also with careful consideration. We can't stifle innovation, but we must protect consumers and ensure responsible development. My focus is on transparency and accountability. We need to know how these algorithms are making decisions, especially when it comes to things like healthcare, finance, and criminal justice. I'm working with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to establish a regulatory framework. I'm optimistic we can get something passed within the next year.

**Margaret Brennan:** There's concern about AI-generated misinformation and its impact on elections. How do you plan to address that?

**Sen. Amy Klobuchar:** That's a significant concern. AI has the potential to amplify misinformation and make it harder to distinguish between what's real and what's fake. We need to require clear labeling of AI-generated content, especially when it's used in political advertising. We also need to educate the public about how to spot misinformation and encourage critical thinking. Social media companies have a responsibility to take down harmful content and prevent the spread of disinformation.

**Margaret Brennan:** Turning to infrastructure, the bipartisan infrastructure law is already underway. What are you seeing in Minnesota, and what are the biggest challenges in getting these projects completed?

**Sen. Amy Klobuchar:** The infrastructure law is a game-changer for Minnesota. We're seeing investments in roads, bridges, public transit, broadband internet, and clean water. These projects are creating jobs and boosting our economy. One of the biggest challenges is supply chain issues and workforce shortages. We need to ensure that we have the materials and the skilled workers to get these projects done on time and on budget. We are also working to streamline the permitting process to speed up construction.

**Margaret Brennan:** There's been some criticism that the infrastructure law isn't doing enough to address climate change. How do you respond to that?

**Sen. Amy Klobuchar:** The infrastructure law includes significant investments in clean energy, electric vehicle charging stations, and public transit, all of which will help reduce our carbon footprint. It's not a complete solution, but it's a major step forward. We need to continue to invest in renewable energy and energy efficiency to meet our climate goals. The law also includes funding for climate resilience, which will help communities adapt to the impacts of climate change.
