Nintendo revealed the Switch 2 at a special event on 5th Avenue, attended by journalists and industry insiders. The new console, priced at $450 (or $500 bundled with "Mario Kart World"), features several upgrades based on user feedback from the original Switch.
The Joy-Con controllers now connect magnetically, replacing the previous track system. They also include a gyroscope and mouse mechanic for enhanced precision. The Switch 2 offers improved fidelity, supporting 1080p in handheld mode and 4K when docked, with higher frame rates for smoother gameplay.
Communication is easier with the integrated chat feature, which includes a noise-canceling microphone and high-grade speakers. The webcam can separate up to four players for streaming and party games. Nintendo is also offering free local sharing of digital games among Switch 2 consoles. The console is backward compatible with most Switch 1 games, with some titles, like "Mario Party Jamboree," offering paid upgrades.
"Mario Kart World" was showcased, featuring larger races with 24 drivers and an open-world exploration mode. A knockout mode adds a competitive twist. Another title, "Drive X Drag," a 3-on-3 wheelchair basketball game, generated mixed reactions.
To combat scalpers, Nintendo requires a Nintendo Switch Online subscription and at least 50 hours of playtime to pre-order the console. Originally planned for April 9th, pre-orders were delayed due to tariffs.
