SECRETARY KRISTI NOEM: Good morning, Margaret. Thanks for having me.
MARGARET BRENNAN: Secretary Noem, let's start with the situation at the southern border. We've seen a recent surge in attempted crossings. What is the Department of Homeland Security doing to address this?
SECRETARY KRISTI NOEM: We are deploying additional resources to the border, including personnel and technology. We are working closely with our partners in Mexico and Central America to address the root causes of migration. We are also focused on dismantling the criminal organizations that facilitate human smuggling.
MARGARET BRENNAN: There have been criticisms that your policies are inhumane. How do you respond to those criticisms?
SECRETARY KRISTI NOEM: We are committed to enforcing our laws while treating everyone with dignity and respect. We provide humanitarian assistance to those who need it, and we are working to ensure that asylum claims are processed fairly and efficiently.
MARGARET BRENNAN: Shifting gears, cybersecurity remains a major concern. What are the biggest cyber threats facing the United States right now?
SECRETARY KRISTI NOEM: We are seeing a significant increase in ransomware attacks targeting critical infrastructure, such as hospitals and energy companies. We are also concerned about foreign adversaries attempting to steal intellectual property and disrupt our elections. We are working to strengthen our cybersecurity defenses and to hold those who attack us accountable.
MARGARET BRENNAN: What specific steps are you taking to protect against these threats?
SECRETARY KRISTI NOEM: We are working with the private sector to improve their cybersecurity practices. We are sharing threat information with our partners, and we are investing in research and development to create new cybersecurity technologies. We are also working to recruit and train a skilled cybersecurity workforce.
